Richard delivered his My Maths Story assembly and supported two Maths in the Real World class sessions as part of Archbishop Cranmer C of E Academy’s School’s Careers Week.
Mel Stevens, Headteacher at Archbishop Cranmer C of E Academy, Nottingham, said: "Richard ran a brilliant assembly. The children absolutely loved learning about his ‘numeracy journey’ and found it so inspirational. It was the best start to our Careers Week! Thank you."
Richard said: "I was really inspired by the amount of effort the school had invested in their Careers Week, by bringing in people from a wide variety of backgrounds to speak about their roles and what had led them to their careers. Hopefully the small part I was able to play inspired them to stay engaged with maths throughout their years ahead."
This is the second time we have recognised Richard as our Volunteer of the Month!
Richard first volunteered with us during the early stages of our new corporate volunteering programme on National Numeracy Day in 2023. Since then, he’s visited nine primary schools, delivering 10 assemblies, supporting 11 class sessions and reaching over 1,100 children. An amazing achievement!
Richard said: "Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of visiting a number of primary schools to talk to them about the importance of numeracy, and what part it plays in all aspects of their life beyond school. In every school I’ve visited there has been a warm welcome from staff and pupils alike, and watching children really engage in the assembly and lesson plans has been a real highlight of these visits.
“Research from National Numeracy shows a strong link between good numeracy and self-confidence, self-control and attitudes to better managing money, as well as improved earnings potential and career opportunities. If we can inspire children at a young age to stay engaged with numeracy, then their future is setup for success."
