Preparing Jake for the journey into work

13 Nov 2017

“I was involved with Prospects for one year to help prepare me for work. I've always been awful at maths so I started the National Numeracy Challenge with support from my key worker, then continued on my own. I completed it over a few sessions.

It was a bit confusing to start with but once I got into it, I felt more confident to do it by myself. I was ok with adding and subtracting and realised that multiplication was my biggest struggle, but the free learning resources in the Challenge website have helped me in all areas of maths.

I love playing darts at home and I can now work out the scores a lot easier, which is brilliant. My goal is to keep improving because I'd like to work towards my apprentice level 3 in childcare and maybe get a part-time job at the same time. I'd recommend the Challenge to other people because I found it very helpful and it has improved my confidence with numbers.”

During 2017 National Numeracy worked with Prospects - the education, employment, skills and care company - to help improve their customers' numeracy and their attitudes to making financial decisions.

The project was funded by the Money Advice Service’s "What Works Fund", which aims to scale up the most effective local projects around the country in order to improve the financial capability of millions of people.
