Volunteer of the Month: November 2024

29 Nov 2024

By Laura Hill, Volunteering Manager

November has been a busy month for our volunteers. 34 volunteers from our corporate partners visited 24 schools across the UK, delivering assemblies and supporting class sessions to celebrate the value of maths in the real world.

We’re pleased to recognise S&P Global’s Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Director, and Iris Karabatos, Associate Director of Global Customer Care, as our Volunteers of the Month for November.

Pollyanna and Iris visited Caversham Primary School in Reading to deliver a My Maths Story assembly as a double act, talking to the children about how they use maths in their jobs and hobbies and encouraging the children to think about how they use maths every day.

Joanna Alexander, Maths Lead at Caversham Primary School, said: "The assembly ran very smoothly. Pollyanna and Iris were clear and confident and were excellent at listening to and answering the children's questions. The children listened well and were kept engaged in the assembly. It had the right mix of information on the screen, the volunteers talking and the children asking questions and the short video was great too."

Pollyanna and Iris clearly enthused the children, with one pupil saying, "I think I’d like to do that job!"

Iris said: "The experience was great and the school staff and the Maths Lead were great in supporting and sponsoring the whole event. It felt exciting!"

This year, 13 S&P Global colleagues have enthusiastically delivered My Maths Story assemblies and supported Maths in the Real World class sessions, inspiring over 2,000 children across the UK to see the value of maths in the real world!

As a lead supporter of National Numeracy Day and a founding member of the National Numeracy Leadership Council, S&P Global plays a pivotal role in championing the numeracy issue in the UK. Together we are ushering in brighter futures for all by inspiring all generations to celebrate everyday maths.

A huge thank you and well done to all the S&P Global volunteers and the schools who hosted them. We look forward to continuing our work together to promote positive attitudes towards maths among children and demonstrate the real-world value of numeracy.
