We’re pleased to celebrate the fabulous team of volunteers from Capital One who this month visited Chisenhale Primary in Tower Hamlets to help pupils see the value of maths in the real world.

Dave Richards, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging delivered his My Maths Story assembly, where discussions included the numbers involved in hiking and swimming, the symmetry in art and how credit cards work.

Dave was then joined by colleague volunteers Shiva Doran, Corporate Social Responsibility Lead, Zahra Deji-Abiola, Strategy Analyst and Jaeho Bae, Business Analyst to support two Maths in the Real World class sessions, sharing information about their jobs and hobbies and how they involve maths and numbers.

Teacher Hannah Houston, Upper Key Stage Two Phase Leader, PPA Teacher said: "The children loved getting to know the volunteers and mining them for information, they liked being the expert on the volunteer and presenting their information to the class. We were able to see the maths links in the hobbies and the jobs and how maths is useful in all areas of the volunteers' lives."

Dave Richards said: "The children were really engaged and asked great questions and the class session was brilliant – again, the children were engaged and interested, and timings of activities meant that the pace of the session was perfect."

Look out for more observations from the children in our upcoming school volunteering case study later this year!

In partnership, Capital One and National Numeracy have a shared commitment to addressing social mobility and supporting people with the number confidence to succeed in life. Capital One were the start-up funder for National Numeracy’s corporate volunteering programme and eagerly continue to get involved as volunteers, helping us to inspire children across the UK with meaningful maths in the real world sessions.

We’re excited for a busy November for our corporate volunteering programme as we celebrate Number Confidence Week, encouraging everyone to feel confident to use maths in everyday life.
